Why am I being asked for an identity check?
The sender wants to check that the files reach the right person. An email address alone does not confirm who you are.

Confirm your email
Open the link from the email you received. Enter the code we send to your email address. Never share this code.
Show your identity document
Use a passport, identity card or driving licence that the check recognises. Take a photo of it and a photo of your face. The check compares your face with the photo on your identity document.
Open the files
Your name must match the name the sender entered, and sometimes your date of birth too. Did the check succeed? Then you save a passkey on your phone or computer, and you use it to open the files.

Who sees my details?
The requester sees the result of the check. The requester also sees the details that are needed, such as your name and sometimes your date of birth. For a transfer, the report for the sender shows your name, your date of birth, the type and number of your identity document, and the country of issue. Your citizen service number is never in it. The report can also show when you downloaded, and from which IP address. Before the check, you can read what happens to your details and how long they are kept.
Do I need my identity document every time?
Usually not. Did the check succeed? Then you create a passkey. You use it to open files securely later. Next time, use your fingerprint, face or device PIN. It works just like unlocking your phone or computer. This works while your check and passkey remain valid. Sometimes a new identity check is needed.
Do I need to pay?
No. You do not need a paid TransferGuard subscription to complete the requested check or receive files.
What if the check fails?
Check that your details match the request and that the photo of your identity document is clear. Follow the instructions on screen. If you cannot continue, contact the requester. Do not send a copy of your identity document by email as a workaround.
Is the check always about files?
Yes. The check is part of a transfer: only once it has succeeded can you open the files. The sender explains in the message what the files are for.
What does the Verified badge mean?
The badge means that a name belongs to an identity document we checked. You also see when that check took place. The badge says nothing more. For example, it does not say whether someone may act on behalf of a company.
What does my own badge give me, and how do I get it?
With a badge, your recipient sees that the files really come from you. It means your identity document has been checked by TransferGuard, so your recipient knows for sure they are dealing with the right person.
How to get it: sign in, click your name at the bottom left and choose Your badge. Take a photo of your passport, ID card or driving licence and look into the camera for a moment. You are done in about 2 minutes, and the check is free once. Do you receive files with an identity check yourself? Then you can switch the badge on right after that check.
Who sees my badge?
Are you a recipient? Then senders who enter your email address only see that you have been checked, and in which month. They do not see your name or details. Are you a sender? Then your recipient sees the name on your identity document. You can always hide your badge: right after the check, through the Hide badge link in our emails, or as a sender under Your badge.
How long is a badge valid?
1 year after the check. For senders shorter if the identity document expires sooner. After that the badge disappears automatically and you can do a new check.
Ready to continue?
Return to the original request in your email or the other browser tab. Continue there if you recognise the requester and understand why the check is needed.
